Our mission is to use litigation and advocacy to remove barriers to registration and voting, particularly those disenfranchising underrepresented and marginalized communities, and to improve election administration.
OUR WORK
LITIGATION
Fair Elections Center investigates under-the-radar violations of the right to vote and has sued to enforce federal and state law requirements in novel ways. We do not have a single approach to litigation, and this frees us to discover new methods. By studying state election codes, including ID requirements and voter registration procedures, we identify opportunities to expand equal access to the ballot. We force election officials to explain why they treat similar groups of eligible voters differently and obtain court orders requiring them to stop such discriminatory practices. MORE>>
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Our Campus Vote Project team works with university and community college administrators, faculty, students, and election officials throughout every academic year to reduce barriers to student voting. Our strategy emphasizes long-term cultural change, anchored in the academic mission of the institution, and leveraging its resources to provide growing civic engagement. We work in partnership with more than 280 colleges and universities that enroll 3.4 million students. We average more than 20 campus partnerships in each of our staffed state programs in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin and have partner schools in 41 states and the District of Columbia. In 2018, Fair Elections Center created a new project to promote the important role of poll workers through piloting WorkElections.org, a unique web portal designed to centralize and simplify information on poll worker requirements and links to local jurisdictions’ applications. The work is an effort to create a more diverse pool of poll workers, so they more closely reflect the communities of voters they help. Leading into 2020, we expanded WorkElections.org to include comprehensive information on poll worker requirements -- including voter registration and training requirements, hours, pay rates, and links to applications -- for more than 5,000 jurisdictions across the country.
