Lynn Schmidt: College students' rights have eroded. They need, more than ever, to cast votes.

As college students head to campus this fall, there is one more item to add to the back-to-school list: Talk with your student about their voting plan.

This week my husband and I dropped our daughter off at college. Many conversations have taken place in our house with our 18-year-old daughter about the big issues she may face during her college years. Included in those: drugs, alcohol, sex, and harassment, just to name a few.

One more, her voting plan.

The same daughter recently said to me, “Mom, you had more rights than I did when you were my age.” She is correct in her assessment. I went on to tell her that the only way to reverse these trends is to get out and vote.
